Why Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping

That little gauge on the front of your boiler tells you more than most people realise. If your boiler pressure keeps dropping and you find yourself topping it up every few weeks, something is going on, and it is worth understanding what before winter arrives and the boiler locks out on a cold morning.

The good news is that a slow pressure drop is one of the most common boiler complaints there is, and in many cases the cause is minor. The trick is knowing the difference between a system that just needs the occasional nudge and one that is quietly losing water somewhere it should not. This article walks you through both, and gives you a plain rule for when to pick up the phone.

What boiler pressure actually is

A modern combi or system boiler is a sealed circuit. Water is pumped around your radiators in a closed loop, and that loop needs to be under a small amount of pressure to work properly, typically between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is cold.

When the heating runs, the water expands and the pressure rises slightly. That is normal. What is not normal is the cold pressure creeping downwards over days or weeks, because in a sealed system the water has nowhere legitimate to go. If pressure is falling, water is leaving the system, or in one specific case, air is leaving it. Either way, the boiler will eventually drop below its minimum pressure and shut itself down as a safety measure.

Normal top-ups versus a real leak

Every sealed heating system loses a tiny amount of pressure over time. Radiators get bled, tiny amounts of air work their way out through automatic vents, and seasonal temperature swings shift the gauge a little. Topping up once or twice a year, particularly after bleeding radiators in autumn, is nothing to worry about.

A real problem looks different. The pattern to watch for is repetition: you top the system up to 1.2 bar, and within a week or two it is back near zero. Water is escaping somewhere, and it is doing so constantly, whether you can see it or not.

Rule of thumb: topping up once or twice a year is normal. Topping up more than once a month, or losing a full bar of pressure within a week, means the system has a fault that needs finding. Call a heating engineer rather than keeping the top-ups going.

That last point matters more than people think. Every top-up brings fresh water into the system, and fresh water carries oxygen and dissolves the inhibitor chemical that protects your radiators and boiler internals. A system that is constantly topped up corrodes from the inside, produces sludge, and shortens the life of the boiler. Repeated topping up is not a fix. It is slow damage with extra steps.

Why boiler pressure keeps dropping: the usual suspects

A leak somewhere on the system

The most common cause is a small water leak, and it is often not at the boiler itself. Check radiator valves for green or white crusty staining, look under any visible pipework, and feel along skirting-level pipes for damp. Pay attention to any radiator that was recently bled or adjusted, as valve glands weep more often than people expect.

Be aware that a leak small enough to drop your pressure can be too small to leave a visible puddle. Pipes under floors or in screed can lose water into the fabric of the house for months. If you have checked everything visible and found nothing, the leak may simply be hidden, which is itself useful information for whoever investigates.

A failed expansion vessel

Inside or near your boiler is an expansion vessel, a small tank with a rubber diaphragm and a cushion of air that absorbs the expansion of hot water. When that air cushion is lost, the pressure swings wildly: it shoots high when the heating runs, the boiler dumps water through its safety valve, and the cold pressure then reads low.

The telltale sign is a gauge that climbs well above 2.5 or 3 bar when the heating is on and sits low when it is off. Often the vessel just needs repressurising with air, which is a quick job for an engineer, though a split diaphragm means replacement.

A passing pressure relief valve

Every sealed system has a safety valve that opens if pressure gets too high, discharging outside through a small copper pipe, usually poking through an outside wall near the boiler. Once these valves have opened, they sometimes fail to reseal fully and let water dribble away continuously.

Go outside and look at that pipe. If it is dripping, or there is staining on the wall beneath it, you have very likely found your leak. The valve itself is inexpensive to replace, but a dripping relief valve is often a symptom of the expansion vessel problem above, so both should be checked together.

A leak inside the boiler

Heat exchangers, pump seals and internal joints can all weep. Sometimes the leak evaporates off hot components before it ever drips, which is why a boiler can be losing pressure with no water visible anywhere. Internal leaks are a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, not a look-inside-yourself situation. The casing should stay on.

How to top up safely while you wait

Topping up is a reasonable short-term measure to keep the heating running, provided you are not doing it constantly. The general process is:

  1. Turn the boiler off and let the system cool for an hour or so.
  2. Find the filling loop, usually a braided silver hose or built-in lever arrangement under the boiler.
  3. Open the valve slowly and watch the gauge climb to between 1 and 1.5 bar.
  4. Close the valve fully, then reset the boiler if it has locked out.

Check your boiler manual for the exact method, as filling arrangements vary between models. Never leave the filling loop open, and never top up above 1.5 bar cold, as overfilling just forces water out through the relief valve.

What to note down before you call anyone

Whoever you call, you will get a faster and often cheaper diagnosis if you can tell them three things:

  • How quickly the pressure drops, for example from 1.2 bar to 0.5 bar in ten days.
  • Whether the pressure spikes high when the heating runs.
  • Whether the external relief pipe is dripping, and whether you have found any damp or staining indoors.

Those three answers usually narrow the fault down to one or two causes before an engineer even opens the toolbox.

When it is time to stop topping up

If you are reaching for the filling loop more than once a month, the fault will not fix itself, and every refill is degrading the system a little further. A pressure loss investigation is routine work for any competent heating engineer, and catching a small leak early is far cheaper than repairing sludge damage or a corroded heat exchanger later.
