Why Your Boiler Locks Out and Shows a Fault Code

A cold radiator, a flashing display, and a code you have never seen before. If your boiler has stopped and is showing a boiler lockout fault code, the first thing to know is that this is the boiler doing its job. A lockout is a deliberate safety shutdown, not a breakdown in the usual sense. The boiler has spotted something it does not like, and rather than carry on regardless, it has switched itself off and put a code on the screen to tell you why.

That distinction matters, because it changes what you should do next. Some lockouts clear with a single safe reset and never come back. Others are the boiler repeatedly warning you about a real fault, and pressing reset again and again only masks the problem. This article explains what a lockout actually is, how to reset the boiler safely, and the point at which it stops being a reset job and becomes a call to a Gas Safe engineer.

What a boiler lockout actually is

Modern boilers monitor themselves constantly. Sensors watch the flame, the water pressure, the temperature of the heat exchanger, the fan speed and the flue. If any reading falls outside safe limits, the control board shuts the burner down and locks the boiler out until someone intervenes.

It is the same logic as a fuse or a trip switch. The shutdown is not the fault. The shutdown is the protection. The fault is whatever caused the reading to go out of range in the first place, and the code on the display is the boiler's best guess at what that was.

This is why a lockout should never simply be ignored or reset repeatedly without thought. The boiler stopped for a reason, and the reason does not go away just because the display does.

What your boiler lockout fault code is telling you

Every manufacturer uses its own codes, so an EA on one boiler means something different from an F22 on another. Your user manual will have a list, and if the manual is long gone, searching the boiler's make, model and the exact code will usually find the official meaning. Broadly, codes fall into a few families:

  • Ignition failure: the boiler tried to light and could not, or the flame went out mid-cycle.
  • Low water pressure: the pressure gauge has dropped below about 1 bar and the boiler will not run until it is topped up.
  • Overheating: the water inside got too hot, often because it is not circulating properly.
  • Fan or flue problems: the boiler cannot confirm that combustion gases are being carried safely outside, so it refuses to fire.
  • Sensor or control faults: a component is giving readings the board does not trust.

Write the code down before you do anything else, along with roughly when the lockout happened and what the weather was like. If an engineer does need to visit, that information genuinely shortens the diagnosis.

How to reset a locked out boiler safely

Most lockouts are cleared with the reset button, which is usually marked with a flame symbol or the word reset, either on the front panel or through the display menu. Before you press it, run through a few quick checks:

  1. Check for a smell of gas. If you can smell gas, do not reset anything. Open windows, avoid switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
  2. Check the pressure gauge. If it reads below 1 bar, top the system up using the filling loop first. Resetting a boiler with no pressure will just trigger another lockout.
  3. Check the condensate pipe in cold weather. A white plastic pipe running outside can freeze in winter and stop the boiler. Gently thawing it with warm, not boiling, water often clears an ignition lockout instantly.
  4. Check the obvious. Has a prepayment meter run out? Has other gas in the house, like a hob, stopped working too? If so, the problem may be the supply, not the boiler.
  5. Press and hold reset for a few seconds, then give the boiler a minute or two to run its start-up sequence.

If the boiler fires up and stays running, keep half an eye on it for a day or two but there is no need to panic. One isolated lockout, especially after a power cut or a cold snap, is not unusual.

Rule of thumb: reset once. If the boiler locks out again with the same code within a day or so, stop resetting and get it looked at. Repeated resets do not fix anything, and on some faults they make the eventual repair worse.

When repeated lockouts stop being a reset job

A lockout that keeps returning means the underlying fault is still there. The boiler is not being temperamental, it is being consistent. There are also some situations where you should not attempt a reset at all:

  • The same code comes back within hours or days. Something is genuinely wrong, and each restart is putting stress on components like the ignition system and the pump.
  • The pressure keeps dropping. If you are topping up every week, water is escaping somewhere: a leak on the system, a failing expansion vessel or a passing pressure relief valve. Topping up treats the symptom only.
  • You see soot, staining or scorch marks around the boiler or flue, or the flame through the sight glass looks yellow or lazy rather than crisp and blue. Switch the boiler off and do not reset it.
  • The code relates to the flue, fan or flame detection. These are combustion safety systems. They exist precisely so the boiler will not run when it cannot prove the fumes are going where they should.
  • Anyone in the house has unexplained headaches or drowsiness that ease when they go out. Take that seriously, ventilate, and get the appliance checked before using it again.

A boiler that keeps locking out is not broken in spite of the safety system. It is telling you the truth over and over, and hoping someone listens.

Anything beyond the reset button, the filling loop and a frozen condensate pipe is legally as well as practically a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Opening the case of a gas boiler yourself is not a grey area, so resist the temptation, however confident the video tutorial sounds.

Can you prevent lockouts in the first place?

Mostly, yes. The majority of the lockouts we attend trace back to things an annual service would have caught: a partially blocked condensate trap, an ignition electrode near the end of its life, sludge slowing circulation, or a pressure vessel that has quietly lost its charge. A serviced boiler still fails occasionally, but it fails far less often, and usually with more warning.

Lagging the external condensate pipe before winter, keeping the system pressure in the green zone, and running the heating briefly once or twice over summer all help too. None of it takes long, and all of it is cheaper than an emergency call-out on the coldest weekend of the year.
