Boiler Service Cost: What You Should Pay, and What You Get
Ring three local firms for a boiler service and you can get three quotes that are fifty pounds apart, with no obvious explanation for the gap. That makes people suspicious in both directions: the dear one feels like a rip-off and the cheap one feels like a trap. Neither instinct is always right, but the second one is right more often.
This guide sets out the typical boiler service cost in the UK and around Bristol, what a proper service should include for that money, and how to spot the cut-price offers that leave out the parts that matter. It finishes with the honest maths on annual plans, because for most households they do work out cheaper over time.
Boiler service cost UK: the going rate
For a standard annual service on a gas combi or system boiler, most established UK firms charge somewhere between £80 and £120. In Bristol and the surrounding villages the middle of that range is typical. London sits higher, and some rural areas sit a little lower because engineers cover more ground between jobs.
A few things nudge the price within that band:
- Boiler type. A back boiler or an older floor-standing model takes longer to strip down and check than a modern wall-hung combi.
- Access. A boiler boxed into a tight kitchen cupboard or tucked in a loft adds time, and time is what you are paying for.
- First visit or repeat customer. Many firms, including ours, charge slightly less for boilers they already know, because there is no history to work out.
- Time of year. Book in spring or summer and you may pay less and wait days rather than weeks. Everyone wants a service in October.
Rule of thumb: a genuine service from a Gas Safe registered engineer takes 45 minutes to an hour. If the price only makes sense for a 15-minute visit, that is what you will get.
What a proper service actually includes
A boiler service is not a glance and a sticker. Done properly, the engineer should:
- Run the boiler and check it fires, modulates and shuts down correctly
- Take a flue gas analyser reading to confirm the boiler is burning gas safely and efficiently
- Remove the casing and visually inspect the burner, heat exchanger, seals and electrical connections
- Check gas pressure at the meter and at the boiler, and confirm there are no leaks
- Inspect the flue and its terminal, inside and out where accessible
- Check the condensate pipe and trap, a common cause of winter breakdowns
- Test safety devices, including the flame failure device
- Check system pressure, top it up if needed, and look over the filling loop and pressure relief pipework
- Record the results and leave you a written or emailed report, not just a verbal all-clear
That report matters more than people realise. If you ever claim on a boiler warranty, the manufacturer will ask for evidence of annual servicing, and a dated record from a Gas Safe registered engineer is exactly that evidence. Miss a year and many manufacturers will refuse the claim, even on a boiler that is otherwise well within its warranty period.
What a suspiciously cheap service leaves out
You will see boiler services advertised at £45 or £50, sometimes less. Occasionally that is a genuine loss-leader from a firm hoping to sell you a new boiler. More often, the price is low because the job is thin. Here is what tends to go missing.
The casing never comes off
The quickest way to shave half an hour off a service is to run the boiler, watch the flame through the sight glass, wipe the front and leave. Without removing the casing, nobody has looked at the heat exchanger, the seals or the burner. A slow leak, a perished seal or early corrosion goes unnoticed until it becomes a breakdown, and breakdowns rarely choose a convenient week.
No flue gas analysis
The analyser reading is the single best indicator of how safely and efficiently your boiler is burning. It is also the check that requires calibrated kit and a few minutes of patience. Cut-price services often skip it, which means the one measurement that could flag a developing combustion problem is never taken.
No written record
If you get nothing in writing, you have nothing for your warranty, nothing for a future buyer's solicitor, and nothing to compare against next year. A one-line text saying the boiler is fine does not count.
The upsell is the real product
Some very cheap services exist mainly to get an engineer in front of your boiler so they can tell you it needs replacing. Sometimes it does. But if every cheap service in your area ends with a quote for a new boiler, treat the pattern as information.
A cheap service that misses a failing seal is not a saving. It is a deposit on a February call-out.
Extras that are fair to pay for
Not every addition to the bill is padding. These are legitimate extras that a service can reveal:
- A magnetic filter clean or installation. Filters catch the sludge that shortens a boiler's life. Cleaning one takes minutes; fitting one from scratch is a separate priced job.
- Inhibitor top-up. Central heating water needs chemical protection against corrosion. Topping it up is cheap insurance.
- Replacement parts. Seals, electrodes and condensate traps wear out. A good firm will quote before fitting anything, not surprise you at the door.
What is not fair is a headline price that quietly excludes things every service should include, like the flue gas reading or the report. Ask what is covered before you book, and a reputable firm will tell you plainly.
Why an annual plan usually works out cheaper
Paying for a service each year, on time, is the cheapest way to run a boiler, and a plan is the easiest way to make that actually happen. The maths is straightforward:
- A serviced boiler keeps its warranty valid, so a failed part in year four costs you nothing instead of hundreds
- Small faults get caught at £15-part prices rather than £300-breakdown prices
- Plan customers are usually serviced in the quiet months, so the visit happens rather than slipping to next year
- Many plans include priority call-out, which matters most on the coldest week of the year when every firm's diary is full
Worked example: skipping one £90 service to save money looks sensible until a blocked condensate pipe, which the service would have caught, stops the boiler in January and costs a call-out plus a cold weekend. One prevented breakdown pays for several years of servicing.
For landlords the case is even simpler. A gas safety certificate is a legal requirement every twelve months anyway, and combining it with a service in one visit costs less than booking the two separately, with one set of paperwork for your records or your letting agent.
